KeyOS version 1.4.1 now available for testing!

:warning: THIS IS A BETA RELEASE.

KeyOS v1.4.1 is a pre-release build for testing. It is intended for users who are comfortable flashing firmware through recovery mode and are happy to help us test. If you’d rather wait for the stable release, no action is needed, the official KeyOS v1.4.1 release will follow.

Before you begin: as with any firmware update, and especially a beta, please make sure your backup is current before installing.

Important: in order to upgrade from this beta to the official KeyOS v1.4.1 release, you will have to follow the same recovery steps again with the v1.4.1 recovery file.

WHAT’S CHANGED

This release focuses on reliability, battery care and update speed. It fixes a Bitcoin app crash when reviewing multisig signers and a set of Airlock and USB issues, makes firmware updates much faster, and improves how Passport Prime charges and protects its battery.

NEW FEATURES

  • Passport Prime now shows a full-screen alert when the battery reaches 2% or below, warning that it will shut down automatically. Plugging in dismisses the alert. If you unplug again before the battery reaches a safe level, the alert returns.

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Firmware updates are now significantly faster. We replaced bzip2 with zstd compression, took advantage of hardware-accelerated SHA256, and optimized the filesystem write path, cutting the time to apply a 30 MB update significantly.
  • Charging is gentler on the battery. Instead of cycling between 4.4V and 4.25V when full, Passport Prime now holds it at a steady 4.3V. This reduces long-term wear and makes the battery percentage more accurate.
  • Passport Prime now shuts down cleanly before the battery runs flat, even if the battery percentage has drifted after many partial charges.

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed a Bitcoin app crash that could occur when scrolling through the signers list a multisig wallet.
  • Fixed USB issues that could cause Airlock to hang Windows Explorer, leave microSD cards and USB drives unreadable after Passport Prime wrote to them, write 0 byte files to SD cards or stop iPhones and some laptops from recognising Passport Prime over USB after a reboot.
  • Fixed the launcher price graph overlapping the price and BTC labels. The layout now matches the updated design, and older price history is drawn more faintly so it no longer hides the numbers.

:inbox_tray: HOW TO UPDATE, read carefully, this beta installs through recovery mode

You will need: the beta file and an external drive, a microSD card or USB flash drive. If your drive is microSD or USB-A, you will also need a USB-C adapter.

  1. Download KeyOS-v1.4.1-Recovery.bin to an external drive (microSD card or flash drive) — This can be found on the release notes linked above.
  2. Turn on your Passport Prime
  3. While the Foundation logo is being displayed during boot, tap the power button repeatedly — this should bring you to the Boot Menu
  4. Select “Recovery” — this will bring you to the Firmware Recovery menu
  5. Tap Firmware Recovery
  6. Connect the external drive to the USB-C port on Passport Prime (you will need a USB-C adapter if you saved to a microSD card or USB-A drive in step 1)
  7. Select KeyOS-v1.4.1-Recovery.bin saved during step 1

:warning: Note: in order to upgrade to the official KeyOS 1.4.1 release, you will have to follow the same steps again with the 1.4.1 recovery file.
