Could you walk me through how the passphrase wallet works with envoy & prime specifically?

Does prime keep the passphrase consistently applied once enabled?

What happens to the wallet without passphrase that has been synced with envoy before applying a passphrase?

i could try it all out and figure it out but would like to set it up right from the first go to not sit with a load in archive (on that matter, why no deletion and only archiving for prime?)

Hi @Panicseller, good questions to settle before you set it up.

How it works: applying a passphrase creates a completely separate wallet from the one tied to your seed words alone, with its own accounts and addresses. Passport Prime never stores the passphrase, so back it up somewhere safe.

Does it stay applied? It stays active until you choose Clear Passphrase from the three-dot menu or power the device off. After a restart you’ll need to enter it again.

Your existing non-passphrase wallet: it’s untouched. While a passphrase is active, the accounts view on Passport Prime shows two tabs, one for your default accounts and one for the passphrase accounts. With Envoy paired over QuantumLink, the passphrase accounts appear in Envoy automatically while the passphrase is active and disappear again when it’s cleared, for plausible deniability. Your default accounts stay as they are. Any funds you want in the passphrase wallet have to be sent to a receive address from a passphrase account.

Archive vs delete: you can delete accounts. Archive an account first, then go to View Archive from the three-dot menu on the Accounts page, where you can Restore or Delete it. The archive step is there so an account isn’t removed by mistake.

One more question is there a set character limit to the passphrase?

Passport Prime doesn’t enforce a fixed character limit for wallet passphrases, which aligns with BIP39. Other wallets or hardware devices may impose their own limits, though, so consider what you might use for recovery. Always back up the exact passphrase, including capitalisation, spaces and punctuation.

Great, and yes aware. Circling back to the archive vs delete; you can actually delete accounts? but why can I not delete archived keys or vault passwords? There is no three dot option in the archive menu for those?

You’re right that the behaviour differs between apps, and we can take another look at that.

One reason for keeping generated Vault items archived is to avoid accidentally reusing a secret. They’re derived from your Master Key using a numbered index. Keeping the archived entry reserves that index, so a newly generated password doesn’t inadvertently recreate one you’ve used before.

Bitcoin accounts have a similar consideration, but reusing an account is often more apparent because its existing transaction history and balance reappear. With a password, that reuse could be much less obvious.

That said, the current difference isn’t especially intuitive, so it’s fair feedback.

Okay understand the logic. Could just hide them in the UI but keep it in memory, but overall no issue now that I understand the reason.
