Starter Contributions

Hello, I’m a Rust programmer and I’m interested in Foundation devices. I want to contribute to KeyOS, but I’m having trouble finding an issue or feature that’s not too broad in scope. Any ideas or suggestions of what to work on?

Hey rift, welcome, and thanks for wanting to get involved.

There are two good places to start.

Build an app with the SDK. This is the easiest way in and keeps the scope entirely up to you. Passport Prime runs third-party apps written in Rust, each in its own sandbox, and you can build and test them in the simulator before touching a device. Pick something small you’d actually use.

Improve KeyOS itself. The firmware is open source at GitHub - Foundation-Devices/KeyOS: KeyOS code and tools · GitHub . Small, self-contained fixes tend to land most easily: something that annoys you while using the device, a rough edge in an existing app, or error handling that could be cleaner. We’ve already merged community contributions this way, including improvements to the QR scanner. The open issues on the repo are worth a look too.

If you land on an idea, feel free to post it here before sinking a lot of time into it and we can tell you whether it fits.
